About Artist:
Gilson Lavis is the legendary drummer & founder member of the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. His association & friendship with Jools Holland goes back almost 40 years when Gilson joined Squeeze in 1976.
Gilson specialises in portrait art, paints only in black & white, exploring the contrasts between light & shade. Many of his subjects are selected from the hundred’s of famous performers from around the world, from all genres, that he has worked with during his 50 year career as a professional drummer.
Gilson is rightly proud of his art, when not touring & performing can often be found at home in his studio, painting. His work is highly sought after amongst his musical peers.
Gilson is a high profile musician. The rhythm & Blues Orchestra perform around 100 live shows every year to over half a million people, the highlight of every show a thunderous Gilson Lavis drum solo that leaves the audience in awe. He appears on the BBC New Years Eve “Hootenanny” show which is broadcast around the world, “later with Jools Holland” and also records many TV & radio shows for the BBC.
