He received his formal education at Columbus College of Art Design in Ohio and the American Academy of Art in Chicago, were he earned his degree in fine arts. He currently resides in Anacortes with his wife, artist Anne Schreivogl.

From the artist's website:?"For me, art has been an obsession as well as a passion. Passion would be for the love of it. Obsession means you have no choice. My work takes on two different faces, plein air and impasto. The plein air aspect keeps my technical painting skills freshly honed, giving me the tools in my toolbox. Impasto studio painting, on the other hand, is my more creative side as it allows me to explore texture and color from imagination. My impasto oils have afforded me my own voice in this world. Plein air is controlled by the subject in front of me while my impasto is controlled by the muse within."? (http://alfredcurrier.com/)

?

"In Currier's paintings there is always a balancing act between abstraction and realism, between a kind of social realism and landscape-inspired impressionism.? He would never want to be thought of as a mere illustrator, having long since opted for what he understands to be "fine art" and the freedom of invention it provides him. Fine art, for him, cannot be narrative art, subservient to some other cause. ??[Currier's figures are] bodies bent or in some kind of tension, never posed, never portraits, as if he wishes to preserve their anonymity. Subjects appear oblivious to his gaze or have forgotten that he is holding a sketchbook and pencil. In line and shading, they are swiftly whittled into three-dimensional form."? --Ted Lindberg, author of "Alfred Currier: Impasto" from University of Washington Press.

?About "New Beginnings"

?The artist's signature red outlining accents the forms against a canvas of blues and pinks suggesting early morning light.?Artist's statement: "This is an alla prima painting. Painted in the mid 1980?s from a sketch, I became fascinated by the hustle and bustle of big city life. This is one of a series of paintings that I did of Chicago's "EL". I used to sit in the single seat located at the rear and draw the passengers."
