He was International Newspaper Photogrrapher of the Year of the 59th competiton sponsored by the Missouri School of Journalism for his portfolio works. Plonka has been a 13 time Photographer of the Year winner in various other regional and state competions across the country during his 30 year newspaper career.

I made this image in 1987 on assignment for the Lancaster New-Era newspaper, Lancaster, Pennsylvania., in the nearby town of Ephrata.
I was assigned to cover events around a KKK meeting and rallly. Word on the street that a cross burning ceremony was to happen on a farm outside of town.
No media was permitted on the private property, nut be being a young photojournalist I saw "no" as a challenge.
Under my jacket a stowed a Nikon FM2 with a Nikkor 85mm lens and walked in as they permitted the locals to observe. I was relieved to see that many there were taking photographs.
Klansmen in full robe lined up to have torches lit fire by the Grand Wizard to use in lighting the cross. This is when I made what I thought was a great image.
Back at the newspaper I was in a hurry to process the Kodak P3200 film. I made a mistake when a was putting the film on reels by kinking the film near the end and the images were basically melted together.
40 years later as I currently archive my lifes work I ran across this series of negatives and sandwiched two togetheR to make this image.
