In my film work, I transform a medium that is typically in motion by “stilling” film into stationary sculpture. In so doing, I am celebrating, preserving, and “dis-stilling” value to film itself, reminding us that it can speak to our need to capture a point in time, remember it, and re-frame a story.
Transformation is an exploration of addiction, using cut up 35-millimeter frames from four films that touch on this subject: Traffic, Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The title reflects both my artistic process of repurposing the shape and meaning of film, as well as the hope one can find in facing and overcoming life challenges. It also represents the journey through and out of addiction, and the color and fullness of life that is reclaimed from overcoming such hardship.
My film series explore social issues as well as the experience the viewer may have in relation to physical proximity to the work itself. When viewed from a distance, a piece may appear aesthetically pleasing, but from a closer viewpoint, each film frame may reveal a disturbing reality, serving as a reminder that we must not maintain a passive distance nor lose sight of the content that is revealed up close.
