About Artist:

Known for his mid-century revival of the Florentine mosaic technique of intarsia, Richard Blow's work relates to his experience in Italy, depicting classical motifs, and themes such as landscapes, figures, butterflies, geometry, and many others, which are reflective of the chronological origins of this craft, but also and more importantly, of his inclination towards and striking mastery of modernist and surrealist themes. His pietre dure works were produced at his atelier in Montici, Italy from the late 1940's until the mid-1970's, in a quantity generally estimated to be in a range of 1,000 – 1,500 individual pieces.

Presented here is an outstanding work by Richard Blow, touching several apexes in his career as designer and principal for Montici.  Perhaps first among these, as with any significant work of art, is the successful rendering of a vision that captures and holds the eye, and then the mind’s eye, in a way that increasingly rewards reflection over time.

This work is inspired by various elements of Greek mythology and Roman mosaic, without being specifically beholden to any of them. These would include the attempted abduction of Hippodamia by the centaurs, of Hades conducting Persephone to the underworld, and perhaps most significantly,  A Pair of Centaurs Fighting Cats of Prey, from Hadrian’s villa.

The plaque does have a small loss in the lower left corner, and the edges, predominantly around the outer perimeter, have a scattering of repaired losses and residue, with both issues being caused by the work formerly being poorly mounted in a non-original and badly fitted frame. That frame has been removed, and replaced by a specifically fitted, high quality contemporary Italian frame, which displays the beauty of the work to good advantage. Please refer to the photos, they are an important part of the description, and illustrate any condition issues not otherwise noted.

    It measures 20.875 x 17.0 inches framed, and 15.875 x 12.0 inches by sight.
