About Artist:
Brian Plonka was named the world's best photojournalist, the highest honor from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and Pictures of the Year, the largest and longest running photojournalism contest in the world with the top prize and being named the 59th POYi / International Newspaper Photographer of the Year.
Plonka has won over 700 individual awards and 11 Photographer of the Year titles.Brian Plonka, at 15 years-old, starting his photojournalism career in Pennsylvania at his hometown newspaper the New Castle News. He was 1 of 100 young photojournalistsm culled by Pulitzer-Prize winner Eddie Adams from thousands globally to attend the first Barnstorm Workshop. His assignment was West Point Military Academy and that work landed him an internship at the Associated Press in New York, New York.Plonka has won over 700 individual awards and 11 Photographer of the Year titles. In 1990's he was recruited by Copley Chicago Newspapers as lead photographer for the entire suburban daily chain providing solo coverage of the Chicago Bulls entiren regular nd 3 post seasons and championships. Resposibilities also included all special sections and self generated documentaries such as "Generations Under the Influence" that was dedicated to his alcolic father. It was during that time he started working from a personal perspective. In the late 1990's he was recruited by The Spokesman-Review where his personal perspactive approach was granted artistic freedom and his style matured. During his first year on the staff he produced photography for a year long series "The Spirit of the West" that won several Gold Medals from the Society of News Design that lauded his innovative and unique style. The following year Plonka produced "The 10 Commandments" and "Living and Dying in Libby." After leaving the newspaper platform he focused on the needs of local and national non-profit agencies documenting their stories that have raised over 100,000k in credited donations. He has been a director of photography for many local credit union campaigns that garnished many Addy Advertising awards. He was cinematographer and director of photography for the ITVS and PBS funded documentary "The Blackfeet Flood" that aired internationally on the PBS World Channel and Independent Lens. Plonka's one-minute satarycal films in the fiction world have been screened worldwide at more than 20 film festivals. Plonka devotes over 12 hours a day practicing his craft.
