About Artist:
Pedro Pires, originally from Luanda, Angola, is a distinguished contemporary artist from the scenic town of Sintra, Lisboa.
Over the last 10 years, his artistic journey has unveiled a profound exploration of borders, offering a mosaic of perspectives illuminating the human experience's intricate facets. This paper work, entitled "Fold," exhibits a deeply personal style, portraying anthropomorphic forms set against a stark yellow background. These figures in Pires' art, often appearing incomplete, fragmented, or mutilated, emerge through dynamic and destructive actions enacted upon the paper. Guiding molten metal drops and projections onto a predefined surface, the artist orchestrates a process resulting in burn marks, perforations, stains, and streaks. These directed yet unpredictable traces and scars define the figures, endowing them with an enigmatic and eerie presence suspended between emergence and dissolution.
The portrayal of humans through these chance scarifications conveys the concept of bodily pulverization akin to exposure to invisible blasts, rifle bullets, or painful traumas. This approach underscores the artist's contemplations on topics such as warfare, violence, migration, displacement, and the delineations that define our world.
Pires' education includes a Master in Fine Arts 09/10, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London, UK; Graduated in 2005 with a BA in Sculpture from the Fine Art Faculty of Lisbon, Portugal; and in 2004, Pires obtained the Fine Art Erasmus Scholarship for the University of Athens.
Throughout his career, Pires's work has graced prestigious venues, including the Natural History Museum of Angola, Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal, 1:54 Art Fair, Christie's in London, Lagos Biennial, Cape Town Art Fair, Grand Palais – ArtParis in France, Gallery Momo in Johannesburg and Cape Town, Lorne Biennale in Australia, and ExpoChicago in the USA.
