About Artist:
Tonya Eckerman:
Contemporary Abstract Paintings Expressing Freedom, Possibility, and Color
Born into a family of professional artists in the San Francisco area, Eckerman grew up watching her grandfather, a master draftsman, design everything from fortune cooking folding machines to consumer packaging for national brands-all without the aid of a computer. This early experience shaped her sense of human possibility and gave her the confidence to express herself with creative abandon.
Self-taught, the Paradise Valley, AZ artist's speciality is in her layering process to create one-of-a-kind sculptured paintings. Fluent in pastels, watercolors, and oils, she prefers working with the bright hue of acyrylics and using tecture to enhance it through the buildup of layers for depth and motion.
In addition to her studio, Eckerman loves to work outside, laying her canvas flat on the groud where she can approach it from all angles. "Paintig for me is a very active experience, a party" She allows the events around her-people, animals, objects-to become a playful part of the painting process. In a physical, Jackson Pollack-like fashion, she continually scrapes and manipulates the layers to produce a painting that people can "touch and experience", she says. "I want them to close their eyes and feel it as much as we see it... and have some fun with that."
A lifelong artist, Eckerman has enjoyed careers as both a Master Colorist and Educator for Clairol, and is a sought out designer in the multi-million dollar luxury real estate market.
Her paintings have been sold directly and through Galleries with her paintings being held in private collections throughout the world.
