About Artist:
Vahakn Arslanian (born 1975, Belgium) is an artist based in New York. Arslanian is mostly self taught, though has studied at the New School and the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has also been called a protege of Julian Schnabel; the two have worked together since Arslanian was just five years old. Fascinated by airplanes, Arslanian often works with discarded aircraft windows, breaking the glass and inserting small drawings into the center. Candles, birds and airplanes are often seen as recurring themes in Arslanian's work. Vahakn's work has been shown by Vito Schnabel at exhibitions in London (Mr. Big Ben), in New York City (Holy Heavenly, Ghost of a Plane, and Jesus Loves Captain Sully Sullenberger), and in Switzerland at the 2011 St. Moritz Art Masters. His collaboration with Julian Schnabel, "The Ones You Didn't Write? The Maybach Car," was displayed on the Grand Canal during the Venice Biennale. Vahakn divides his time between his studios in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and Petite Saline, St. Barth.
