Aimuan Ogboghodor
ArtistNigeria
About Artist:
Aimuan is an emerging contemporary artist. He shares an emotional and unique perspective of his community and culture through his art works and often likes to blend his traditional roots with his more urban realities.
He graduated from the famed Fine Arts department of the University of Benin. He has successfully exhibited at the Nigerian Undergraduates' Exhibition of Arts organized for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Nigeria in 2003. He also jointly created the 40ft mural at St Peter?s Catholic Church in Benin City, Nigeria.
His art has evolved since his University days. Moving from a more figurative form of expression to more Abstract forms. He is always exploring deeper layers of himself, revealing new understanding and philosophies as he goes.
He has been developing his current art style for a year now, mainly centered on perceptions of time, space and identity. He wants to create art that the audience can participate and interact with thereby sharing his art in a unique way. He believes that both the artist and the audience create art in a continuous process.
About Artwork:
The art piece reflects my relationship with the concepts of time and space.
It explores a range of material to bring these concepts to focus. The Key locks represent opportunity and the clock handles represent time.
In an attempt to create art that interacts with audience beyond the senses of sight, I have indulged in more tactile experiences. That's where the idea of using doors as the primary canvas was born.
Turning the wooden knob of the door reveals another aspect of the Art form. On this side of the door are words that represent a personal realization. A realization attached to the process of making this Art piece.
Supporting these words and also embellishing the surrounding space, are spontaneous doodles consisting of lines and forms heavily inspired by African traditional and modern symbols.
I believe both the Artist and the audience create Art. This inspired the creation of an empty space on the inside of the door, for the viewer who buys the artwork to express his or herself. This gesture is meant to give the buyer a deep experience and connection with the Art.
Although both sides of the door represent two significantly related concepts and events, they have no causal connection. Hence the title Synchronicity. The first of a new, bold and experiential art form.
I started working on doors after doing some doodling on the studio wardrobe door. It was the clearest and most fluid of moments, and I have tried to carry that spontaneity into subsequent works. It has been a fulfilling experience building this artistic language. I have learnt so much more about myself on this journey. Now I wish to share it with the world.
