Ancient Ache
ArtistNamibia
About Artist:
Ancient Ache, based in Windhoek, Namibia and Cape Town, South Africa, is known for his abstracted paintings of figures through the distortion of key features of the human anatomy. The artist focuses on challenging viewers to shift their perspective of reality, and what it means to be human, by incorporation mythological and folklore elements into his work.
His skilled use of digital and traditional (acrylic-impasto) art techniques creates a commentary on the state of art techniques and explores how they can be subtly nudged into the future.
Ancient Ache has participated in group shows in Cape Town, South Africa, and Windhoek, Namibia - as well as international award programs since 2016.
About Artwork:
"Aya, 2017" is part of a series titled UNEARTHED, wherein the artist explores his perception of humanity through distorting the facial features of his subjects. Through doing so, he creates tension within the work by challenging himself and viewers on what they consider 'normal' and 'beautiful'. The removal of the "seeing eyes" and the addition of the "all-seeing eye" acts as a literal aid to the concept of the series - wherein he asks "What were we and what can we become?".
The artist sees "Aya, 2017" as a sort of catalyst that pushed him to unapologetically explore what it means to be human. It is the piece that created the foundation of his successful art career.
