About Artist:

My name is Nyle Major. I am a freelance visual artist from Auckland, New Zealand. I have been actively creating, studying and exhibiting for over 8 years. I have studied locally and overseas, have had extensive exhibition experience, and as a result, have developed and promoted my practice into a conceptually sound, technically adept and highly professional practice.

My practice is based upon the 19th century techniques I learned while studying in France. Coupled with a contemporary background, my work has evolved into strong and visually intense atmospheric scenes which attract the viewer to experience multiple levels of visual and conceptual detail.

About Artwork:

As a species, we have attempted to control, manipulate and conquer nature, often forgetting that we are part of nature, and that nature ultimately controls us. We believe that we are different, and are in charge of our own destinies. But everything and everyone must be created, and to be created, means they must one day come to an end.

“In the cycle of nature there is no such thing as victory or defeat: there is only movement.” Paulo Coelho 2013.

History has shown that there have been great, developed and intelligent civilizations who ruled their own time as if they were the ultimate victors in the quest to conquer nature. Now we gaze upon the ruins of their ancient civilizations in wonderment, asking ourselves how could they create a working and successful society, and for it to exist today as ruins?

We are no different. Our civilization will one day come to an end and be succeeded by another, and nature will slowly start to reclaim the things that we once proudly thought would stand unconquered forever. It is commonly referred to as “Ouroboros”, something constantly recreating itself, beginning anew as soon as it ends.

This series explores the fragility, beauty and destructive power of nature, turning ends into new beginnings and examining the ever present and continuing cycle of nature itself.

To represent “Ouroboros”, the paintings are designed around the Fibonacci numbering sequence which itself appears in every aspect of nature, thus creating a series which has a beginning- but no end. Instead, just a constant cycle from the inside out to the outside in.
