About Artist:
Art - the blank canvas as an outlet for an idea.
Eric McCuaig was born in Canada and began painting in 2013 while living in Spain. His artistic vision is to take a simple idea – for example a forest path, an old colonial building, the memory of a tree, a field of flowers and so forth then communicate it with pure color and simple composition. Art is a beautiful visual language and McCuaig’s paintings capture scenes and moods in a universally accessible style.
Education: BA International Development (Political Economy) University of Guelph, Canada
Artistic Influences: Andre Derain, Silvio Aragao, Ettore DeGrazia, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Maurice de Vlaminck, Alexander Young Jackson, Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, Giorgio Morandi, Katherine Bernhardt, Philip Guston.
About Artwork:
Orange Hill Without Trees 48 x 32 inches
(2016) oil on plywood
Artist - Eric McCuaig
I found a piece of discarded plywood, and noticed that it came from Canada, my home country (I now live in Colorado). This could not go to waste. Somebody had cut a tree down and I found a part of it, and was going to put it to good use. Now if you have never painted on plywood, believe me it is not easy. I now know why artists use canvas. It's like cheating. Imagine the poor cave painters! The result is a primitive landscape painting, with oddly, an orange hill and what looks like trees that have been cut down. Fitting for a plywood painting.
