About Artist:

"Where do we come from?  What are we?  Where are we going?"  Gauguin's questions feel no less urgent today than they did a century ago.  Our answers will likely differ from his, and so will the art we make out of them.

About Artwork:

Fall Labyrinth: What are we?

The twenty photos on the left side of this diptych were shot from the same spot as those for Winter Labyrinth, but in different weather, with different light, and with a different question in mind.  "What are we?" I wondered, while looking in twenty directions from where I stood.

In each direction I saw something that reminded me of an evocative Attic Greek amphora by the Berlin Painter.  One side of the vase shows a singer playing a lyre, his head thrown back in song.  The other side shows a judge with a staff, evaluating the singer's performance.

As in all of my diptychs, the right side here mirrors the left. The twenty "looking out" photos are flipped horizontally, to provide a formal ground for the right side, which "looks in."

Each diptych will ship in a sturdy mailing tube, as two high-quality, semi-gloss digital inkjet prints, each 36" by 36" (or smaller, if you prefer). Both sheets will be numbered and signed en verso - one with my name, one with my monogram.
