About Artist:
"Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?" (Gauguin in Tahiti, 1897)
Imagine being young enough to ask these questions seriously, yet old enough to doubt they have answers.
For me, pondering such things is like walking into a dark, curving tunnel. Does it lead to a monster? a god? an equation? or nothing at all?
About Artwork:
Winter Labyrinth: Where do we come from?
Bainbridge Island is rich in labyrinths. Designs range from quite simple to extremely complex. Several have been built in lovely natural settings. Visitors usually pay attention to a labyrinth’s materials and construction. Some like to muse, to meditate, or to sketch at the site. Others walk the winding path all the way to the center and back out again.
This particular labyrinth, on this particular day, in this particular light, made me wonder, “Where do we come from?” The left side of my diptych shows twenty cropped photos “looking out” in twenty directions from a single point. After flipping that group of triangles horizontally, the right side “looks in” to find twenty visual responses to the original scene. Most of the motifs on the right are excerpted from Chartres Cathedral.
If you know my other work, you’ll notice that both the “out” and the “in” sides appear more unified here, one overall pattern answering another. But you may not notice that this antikon required subtler layering than any previous one: Ninety-two layers share in the visible image.

Winter Labyrinth: Where do we come from? is a new work, never exhibited. Its price is based not on presumed value but on labor.
Each diptych will ship in a sturdy mailing tube, as two high-quality, semi-gloss digital inkjet prints, each 36" by 36" (or smaller, if you prefer). Both sheets will be numbered and signed en verso - one with my name, one with my monogram.
Buyers are encouraged to choose their own format for framing and display, e.g. fine art foam board; narrow (black) metal frames; a wooden, hinged, free-standing, diptych frame.
