About Artist:
HARRY B. CHANDLER
My recent work focuses on series in different media, exploring various themes that percolate in my personal life. My MashUp, Water’s Edge and Autopia paintings combine photography and digital drawing with acrylic painting to explore iconic California imagery. My De-Constructing Desire series uses sculpture, video, photography and painting to probe gender politics, the dialogues of desire, subjugation of women and images of the masculine and feminine. My Imagined Lives series uses video and digital effects to deal with magic realism and relationships.
I studied art at Stanford University and film and video at UCLA Graduate School of Film and Television. My civic projects include Board chairman of River LA, and working on several downtown revitalization projects. I am a collector of Los Angeles-based artists, a founding contributor to Los Angeles MOCA, a former member of the Getty Museum Photo Council and LACMA LENS.

About Artwork:
Well, sometimes I’ll steal something from Van Gogh. I mean I do. Good artists don’t borrow, they steal.- David Hockney, 2018
Using a combination of painting, drawing, photography and digital copies of historical art works, I have done a series of remixes of famous artworks from history, updated with contemporary California iconic landscapes and people. It is called MashUp. Like the creativity that music business has shown via remixing old standards with new beats, I wanting to create new visual works, by mashing up old and new.
For this work, the most famous of all Asia artworks, Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” has been mashed up with California surfers, an oil platform and a Channel Island.
