This is an original painting, oil on board, by Hunt Slonem (b.1951), painted in 1996, entitled "The Contessa". This is a subject that Hunt painted often, but he has steadfastly refused to identify this very young woman, his muse.
This paining is framed by an antique frame, specifically selected by Hunt for this piece, it is part of his artistic expression.
Slonem is famous for his technique of painting the underlying subject and then cross-hatching the painting to create, in his words, "... texture, a woven tapestry feel, brimming with color and vibrancy!"
This painting is quite large, 30 in x 20 in, without frame, excellent as a dramatic mantle piece. The medium is oil on board and, because of this, is more sought after than Hunt's very recent works smaller works.Hunt Slonem's paintings are widely represented in important private collections all over the world.
Over fifty museums include the paintings of Hunt Slonem in their collections, among them: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, all in New York City; the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Brooklyn Museum of Art in Brooklyn, NY; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts; Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, Spain; and the Würth Museum in Künzelsau, Germany.
Awards for Mr. Slonem's work include: Elizabeth T. Greenshields Foundation(Grant, 1976), MacDowell Fellowship (1983,1984,1985), Ragdale Foundation (1983), The National Endowment for the Arts (Grant, 1991) and Stars of Design Award (2009).According to the San Francisco Chronicle: 'Slonem's work has attracted many well-known [Hollywood] art collectors including Sharon Stone, Gina Gershon, Brooke Shields, Julianne Moore, Mandy Moore, Kate Hudson, and J.Lo', among others.
'I'm a big fan of Hunt's work,' Brooke Shields told Daily Front Row. 'It's whimsical without being too sweet.' A March 2012 issue of Architectural Digest features Shields's Manhattan townhouse, with three of Slonem's 'rabbit paintings' prominently displayed on her living room wall...
