The episode of the "Flight into Egypt" is reported in the Gospel of St. Matthew. Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt to save the Child Jesus from the massacre of the innocents ordered by Herod. The theme of "rest from the flight into Egypt" is widespread in Western art, especially in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Often the scene is enriched by the presence of figures of saints. In the specific case of the work in question we have a very essential representation: the artist has created a representation in which only the main characters of the subject appear, namely the Holy Family, St. Joseph and the Madonna and Child on the donkey (element tradition that never fails in the "Flight into Egypt"). A noteworthy peculiarity is the characterization that the artist gave to the figure of St. Joseph, dressed in the typical pilgrim's robe. We recognize its peculiar elements in the wide-brimmed hat, the mantilla and the stick. Another very interesting detail consists in the fact that the Madonna was represented in the act of breastfeeding the Child.
As for the work in question, the stylistic characteristics outlined above would confirm a dating between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth. The general austere character of the representation and chromatism, typical of the artistic production of the Counter-Reformation age, are also in line with this hypothesis. On the hand that made the painting we can be quite certain that it is a local workforce, as we can see the will towards a naturalistic representation of the human figure, even if carried out with limited technical means. Therefore the work is extremely interesting for its popular character which shows us a type of devotion that is outside the official canons, as can also be seen from the elaboration of the iconographic theme in a rather unusual way (with the St. Joseph pilgrim and the Madonna nursing the Child). For these reasons, the painting can be considered a very important historical-artistic testimony of popular piety between the 16th and 17th centuries.
