About Artist:

This captivating and beautifully colored oil painting features the modernist mid-century "big eye" (e.g. Margaret Keane), "long neck" (e.g. Picasso/earlier Modigliani), and mod Parisian party girl (e.g. Levier) art trends into one stunning statement piece. Painted in Paris in 1961, this vintage painting appears to be 1 of 3 known by the artist in this theme (based on my personal research). Unlike similar darker/gray paintings of the time, she is bright and colorful with striking yellow contrasting against turquoise, black, cobalt, and red. Her hair and shirt are indicative of the 60's mod trends and she conveys a curious, thought-provoking sideways glance and a subtle grin. The original mid-century canvas and wood frame with gold detail perfectly represent the time period. The painting is signed Roff 1961 Paris; the artist has been identified as "Roff of Paris" by the gallery that sold one of the other known paintings, but it could be argued the signature says "Roll". Given the date, location, and subject of this piece and the others, it's possible this artist ran in the same circles as Levier, or was in Paris for the UNESCO Young Painters of the World program in October 1961 (which is when one of the other paintings was dated) or the 2nd Biennale de Paris - both of which made Paris an artist's haven and the place to be at the time. Overall, this piece is stunning - both from a mid-century and contemporary perspective - and sure to leave any art lover transfixed, staring, and wondering what this lovely girl was thinking and gazing at during that transcendent time in one of the world's most beautiful cities.
