About Artist:

Rssell Blackwell is an American welder/fabricator who has trained and been certified in a wide variuety of types of welding, and he has worked internationally. Raised in South Carolina where his father had a welding shop, he helped his family on their farm until a few years after he graduated from high school. While working out west in construction (1981–1999), he experienced an epiphany in 1997 on a mountain top in Wyoming. Russell decided to relegate his commercial welding to a supporting role as he aspired to become an artist. He returned home in 2000, where he opened a private welding shop with a small gallery.

Since childhood, he had a gift for art, and it has always been a motivating force. After creating a significant collection of works, Russell Blackwell is ready to make his art available to serious collectors.

About Artwork:

King Nebuchadnezzar II took almost two years to create. The falconer is positioned on one knee with an osprey landing on the leather sheath attached to his arm. The osprey contains almost 2000 feathers constructed from small pieces of metal that are welded together and then the weld is ground off. The glossy coating is clear powder coat which protects him from the elements.

Mr. Blackwell named this work after the biblical king because the figure he created reminded him of pictures from history books that he saw as a young boy. Russell began this piece after doing metal art for only a short period of time. He  wanted to create a formidable personal challenge—to build something that was ambitious and on a large scale—to push himself far beyond his comfort zone. This type of sculpture requires a very different approach than those from clay, bronze, stone or other materials. The artist has to first imagine and construct it in his mind from the inside out and persevere until it matches his inner vision.
