About Artist:

Steven Michael O’Connor is a Los Angeles based contemporary artist whose paintings are undeniably captivating. If you were to classify his work it would be a combination of Neo-Expressionistic and High-Art graffiti. O’Connor’s work is revered by curators for its presentation and embraced by the public because it’s different, yet approachable. His work explores several different series, each with their own message/narrative. Steven Michael O’Connor does not make prints of his work, ensuring that each piece is unique and retains it’s value for his clients. Born in Wilmington, Delaware he attended the University of Tennessee to study Media Arts and later Film at NYU. In 2008 he walked away from a career as a television producer to pursue his dream of becoming a visual artist. From winning “Best in Show” & “Most Original” at the prestigious Beverly Hills Art Show, to multiple exhibits in the DTLA ArtWalk and various galleries across SoCal. His art is reaching a wide audience from both first time buyers to established collectors all across the world, even appearing on film & popular TV shows such as Bones and The Kim Kardashian Show. If you would like to get an idea of what direction the next wave of modern abstract expressionistic painters are headed then look no further.

About Artwork:

This piece is from Steven Michael O'Connor's Protein Series, which explores the relationship between microscopic images of various viruses and their similarities to graffiti art. The concept began with the artist juxtaposing graffiti pieces alongside images of viruses/proteins when he quickly noticed the similarities in style...E-Coli under an electronic microscope resembled his early bubble letter pieces. From this exploration, a new hybrid style started to take shape, one that resembled a clinical or weaponized virus form. This piece, 'Weaponized 4-Solid', is the artist’s vision of a weaponized color. Since military industrial complexes around the world are involved in a perpetual arms race, O'Connor is commenting on the devastating absurdity of constantly seeking new forms of destruction. The idea that this never ending exploration of militarized inventions could eventually turn, even the most beautiful things, into a deadly tool of warfare…in this abstraction it is the weaponizing of the color spectrum. The 4-solid is simply a reference to the purple 4 ball found on a pool table. Steven Michael O'Connor’s paintings may have a controversial and thought provoking core, but they are visually stunning. This 2FT x 4FT piece is painted with a mix of acrylics and oils on handmade wood panel canvas and coated with a resin finish. The aesthetically engaging exterior is painted on all sides, creating an almost sculptural effect. Steven Michael O’Connor’s contemporary paintings almost jump off the wall at the viewers and they don’t ever require a frame. His paintings are also coated with a thick high gloss resin finish that offers a unique fingerprint to his expressive work.
