About Artist:

Susan Leigh Betts

Susan Betts was born in 1969 in the tuna fishing town of Port Lincoln, South Australia. Her family ties are to the Kokata, Wirangu and Mirning groups from South Australia's far western Nullarbor Plains.

A leading contemporary indigenous artist, Susan Betts has designed the iconic painting of Qantas Boeing 747 jet Nalanji Dreaming as well as Sweet Water for Coca Cola, a 2 meter Coke bottle statue now in the Atlanta Museum. Her other works include art for the 2000 Sydney Olympics and in 2007 commemorative mirrors by Schefenacker for Ford Motor Company. She also worked with Art-kitex Australia, O'Neill (Japan)..etc. Susan also Freelances as an Artist/Designer, with several Government department & companies.

Susan is accredited by (NACI) Tandanya, The National Aboriginal Cultural Institute.

She freelances as Artist/Designer to several Government departments and companies with her other designs (Including some local Government logos) being available for sale / view both in Australia and abroad. Her designs grace T-shirts, mugs, fabric panels and many other products which are sold throughout Australia and overseas, as well as local Government logos.

For the talented and prolific Susan Betts, spare time is at a premium but she has nonetheless included many workshops in dozens of schools (public & private) teaching indigenous and non-indigenous students about her complex and fascinating culture, past and present. The opportunity to share the diversities and values of her culture is greatly enjoyed by Susan.

Recently Susan was commissioned by Schefenacker to design five commemorative side mirrors for FORD USA and she is Assistant Administrative Officer with Tandanya, The National Aboriginal Cultural Institute (NACI) in Adelaide, South Australia.

Susan Betts received a Churchill Fellowship in 2018 to investigate sites relating to the Seven Sisters star constellation. She will be travelling from her home in Streaky Bay in South Australia to Canada, the United States and Peru in late 2019. When we commissioned this work, we asked Susan to reflect on what the Churchill Fellowship means for her.
