About Artist:

I began doing serious photography decades ago while on a three-month writing assignment through Southeast Alaska.? Once inspired by this awesome land, I realized that capturing still images was what I wanted to dedicate the rest of my life to doing.

I started out taking mostly landscape pictures, but over time moved into a career as an international travel photographer.

A decade after coming into the field, I began working with National Geographic on a variety of magazine and book assignments.? Soon after that, I did several books for the Smithsonian on their Historic America series.

And at yet a later point, I began shooting large format, single photographer books on subjects like Ireland, The Alps, the Puget Sound region, and the Pacific Coastline.

In recent years I?ve stayed closer to my home, on a lovely island just outside Seattle, where some of my best imagery has been taken.? During this period my visual interests have shifted from pursuing grand landscapes to instead seeking out the subtle diversity of the Nearby. When I go out to photograph in the natural environment, I begin by quieting my mind and trying to sense the rhythms of the land. I'm not there to rationally evaluate, but rather to intuitively respond to that which surrounds me. The intent is to trust my gut and allow it to tell me what to be drawn to.

With my current approach to imagery, subject matter is less important than finding those subtle arrangements of line, form and color that reside just a few feet in front of me.

About Artwork:

There had been a strong overnight snowstorm which had blanketed the island where I live in the Northwest. I went out soon after dawn and walked down the unplowed road to a place called the Grand Forest. With the snow lying deep and silent upon each tree branch, all around me was a perfect white etching.
