About Artist:
Every spring our island becomes a garden of earthly delights: buds and birdsong, green fragrances, crystal air, strawberries. Across the sound, Mount Rainier looks renewed as well, its white cone gleaming between azure sky and Mediterranean blue water. In all seasons, this massive live volcano provides a visual focus for our region, much as Mount Vesuvius does for the Bay of Naples.
About Artwork:
On a fine April day, I took my usual walk to the shore. Tulips bloomed at my feet; cherries above my head; azaleas and camellias all around. The twenty triangles on the left side were selected from shots looking outward in every direction. These were then flipped horizontally, to form a ground for the right side, which looks inward.
The change of seasons got me thinking about natural cycles, from fireflies to the cosmos. Some cycles, like the tides, are gradual and predictable; others, like earthquakes, less so. The figures on the right were residents of Pompeii, covered by volcanic ash in 79 CE.
